Things that will wake you up

Have you ever been woken up in the middle of the night by something out of the ordinary? I'm not talking about seemingly normal things like a knock at the door or a phone call, I talking weird stuff.

A few weeks ago, a sound similar to a cannon shot heard from the hill behind our house woke me up late on a Saturday night. I wrote it off as a moonlight Civil War reenactment.

Last night at just before 12:09 AM I was awakened by a screeching baby monitor. This was due to the electricity at our house going out. I wrote this off on a combination of wind, ice and some jackass driver thinking that four wheel drive means shit on ice-covered highways.

Then there was the creepy chime noise always heard late at night on the weekends when we were home and awake. Later on it was noticed that the chime noise happened at Midnight. Even later it was found out to be the alarm on my iPod. I've never set the alarm but maybe it was trying to tell me something.

Again last night, after the electricity vanished from our rather cold house (it was -10 degrees or colder outside) I was kept awake by the snowplow clearing the neighborhood streets. I have much appreciation for clean streets but starting the job at Midnight is a little too gung-ho.

What odd sounds/events have made you sit up in bed and wonder "what in the hell was that?"

And just because half of Minnesota is taking a snow/cold day, that doesn't mean that MinnPics is taking the day off. Check out the best photography in the Northstar state right now or I'll have my neighbor move his canon to your back yard for a special wake-up call.

Sometimes I will here odd knocking sounds (always at like 3am) if I get up & am drifting back off (or if I haven't been to bed yet). It sounds like someone rapping at a door or window, but I think it's something I hear inside my head when I'm in that sleepy state, not real at all.

Your story is creepy! All this stuff at midnight, the witching hour! lol

Does your iPod chimes sound like windchimes?!

I have issues with hearing windchimes right outside my bedroom window at night. But, we don't have windchimes. And, it's only at night.

*shudders*

In my neighborhood it's usually gunfire.

I recently heard what I thought to be knocking. When water is going down the drains or gutters it usually sounds like knocking. This freaked me out a week or so ago and had me running around the house with the dog to figure out if the coast was clear.

The worst was when my dog was softly woofing in my ear one night. He never woofs or barks unless there is something important and I was up like a shot and had Kim standing by on the phone in case I yelled to her. The dog and I went for a walk around the house to find that the water softener was making strange noises. Once I realized the problem I let the dog wander until he too was convinced all was well and we could head back to sleep.

While I doubt he would do anything but lick the intruder while trying to jump on him for attention, at least I know he will attempt to wake me up if he feels he needs to.

Sometimes when falling asleep I'll hear someone say my name. It's usually in the tone that Mom used to use to get me to do something...you know, that second warning tone of voice. That makes me sit right up and wonder if it was real or not.

We used to bail hay on our back 20 and when I'd be on the tractor raking the hay, I'd hear the same thing. I'd look around expecting to see someone standing in the field calling my name. Cue spooky music.

I am more concerned about the things my dogs "see and hear". Scares the crap out of me...

More than a few times now I wake up in the middle of the night because someone is ringing our front doorbell. Then I get up and there's no one there. So..... either I'm dreaming it or we have some obnoxious kids in our neighborhood.

Cats screeching at each other. Our neighborhood is pretty quiet except for the animals running about at night.

Odd, I heard a "cannon-like boom" the other night too! I brushed it off as an elephant hunt.

Whoa...that's kinda creepy Sornie!!

I hardly hear anything when I sleep--I am really lucky like that. However, the other night my son fell out of bed and knocked over the night stand and the lamp. I think that may have been your boom.
