A sign of the times
(Tuesday, May 20, 2008)
I am a big fan of signage. Unfortunately, I don't always have my camera with me to capture them because I don't bring my backpack everywhere. Fortunately, others have taken it upon themselves to photograph some of the best signage my old hometown (Austin, MN) has to offer.
Behold... The Tranny Shop (via)
The old as hell Apollo Superette sign on Oakland Ave. W. (via)
An ancient McDonald's sign a couple blocks from Apollo (via)
And the much talked about (by me) Piggy Blues BBQ on N. Main St. in Austin, MN (via)
If you're down by Iowa, stop in (closed Sundays) and say Hi to Josh and Andrea.
Cool signs like these seem to be vanishing even though upon closer inspection Austin, Minnesota seems to be a haven for cool, historic and unique signage. What cool signs are their near where you reside? Have you seen any other McDonald's signs like the one here? Am I a total nerd for finding signs cool?

Uh, I live not far away from the old fashioned Arby's sign in Roseville. Does that count?
Man, I want a tshirt made with that tranny sign.
AN old Arby's sign definitely counts. Is it the giant neon hat outline? If so, very nice.
The t-shirt idea is fabulous. I actually have a friend whose parents own a screen printing shop in the same town. Now you have me thinking.
I regularly commute to office by bus and on my way i find many cool hoarding and just like you i hav wished umpteen number of times to capture them. anyway thnks for sharing.
I love the Apollo sign!
We have an interesting sign/truck for a business nearby called "Ave's Taxidermy & Cheese." http://tinyurl.com/5leet5
Where I come from in California there are Tranny shops all over, but I don't think they're quite the same. There are some great signs here in the Q but I'd have to leave the house to photograph them.
