More (Del) Taco choices on the way

Before today, I've heard of some (what I assumed to be) California-only restaurant named Del Taco. I hear it advertised on the L.A. radio station I stream from time to time but it didn't concern me because it's half the country away. Then I caught a snippet of the WCCO news ticker (nothing on their web site yet) a couple minutes ago and was informed that Del Taco is making an announcement today in the Twin Cities that they are building 32 metro-area restaurants.

I am posing an open question to those familiar with the chain. What is the food like? According to Wikipedia, they offer burgers and fries in addition to the Mexican fare. Is the restaurant more like Taco Bell or Chipotle or somewhere in between? Fill me in so us Minnesotans can drool in anticipation. Here's hoping that the southwest metro nabs at least one outlet...

It's like Taco Bell. Cheap, non-mexican food. ;)

I hope it doesn't look like the location in this post. Just what we need -- a pink Taco Bell to go along with Taco John's, Zantigo, and Taco Bell.

Let's get something original and well, not an eyesore!

Actually, it's much better than Taco Bell. They make these bean and cheese burritos with green sauce that I really like and their quesadillas are made with cheese that looks and tastes like real cheese, so I think it is.

From my memories of living in L.A., I concur with Michelle Ann: it's sort of like Taco Bell, but better. It's not "real" Mexican food, but to the extent that McDonald's, et al, approximate American cuisine, Del Taco approximates Tex-Mex.

I gather that it will suck and won't appeal to me. I've already hung my hat on my choices ranging from Taco John's for fast-food, Chipotle for chain fresh-mex and Fajita Republic for home-spun fresh-mex.

I prefer little hole in the wall Mexican restaurants to any Mexican fast food.

Sornie...Chipotle is owned by Mc Donald's. A fact that they don't like people to know about.

They are right. It's better than Taco Bell. In the same way that Burger King is better than McDonald's.

Either way, it's still not food. (Yeah, not even mexican food.)

Let me say, though, that I do like me some of that crap food from time to time.

Good takes, but actually McDonald's sold off Chipotle a couple years back and as far as Taco Bell, I've coughed up more appetizing things than what they call food.

I'm concerned that I may be coming across negatively toward mexican food. I LOOOOOOOOOOVE mexican food. (I am from Southern California, after all.)

And the crap food I referred to was the basic fast food empire crap.

Just wanted to get that off my chest. It's a big chest. :)

Del Taco is fast food with a menu similar to Taco Bell. If you choose Krispy Kremes over Dunkin' Donuts and In and Out Burger over McDonalds, then you'll be likely to choose Del Taco over Taco Bell. There's something perverse about the burrito and fries combo menu item - but I can't help myself - I order it every time!

Bill Roehl said...

Hehe, burrito and fries! That just sounds wrong :)

Sornie said...

Fries should never be combined with Mexican food - no matter how un-Mexican it truly is.

Of course fries can be combined with Mexican food. What could be a better example of the great melting pot than that?

I grew up in Souther California and ate at Del Taco almost every day. It's great food. I have been living here in Minnesota for the last seven years and every time I go back to Cali to visit, the first thing I do is eat at Del Taco. I cannot wait for it to get here!!!

Yahoooooo

Sornie, we had them in St Louis. Think of it as the Fazoli's equivilent to Italian. Better than Taco Bell--kinda like Taco John's--do you guys have Taco Johns over there?

Anyway, no, not even close to Chipotle.

NOTHING beats Chipotle!!
Burrachos is close, but Chipotle is better. :)

Del Taco is generally better than Taco Bell. The "pink" Del Taco (thanks for pointing to my blog) is an older model and not at all likely to be what any new Del Tacos look like.

"I prefer little hole in the wall Mexican restaurants to any Mexican fast food."

Having a blog about Mexican food I don't limit my Mexican food experience to any one type of place. I go to hole-in-the-wall places, fast food places, fast casual places, upscale places and more. And sorry to burst anyone's bubble but only people with limited experience in Mexico think authentic Mexican food HAS to come from a hole-in-the-wall.

"Either way, it's still not food. (Yeah, not even mexican food.)"

Except that every time I go to Del Taco it is Mexican people making the food and I also see Mexican people there eating the food. And it's way more Mexican than food from a Chinese restaurant, elitist comments to the contrary notwithstanding.

"I'm concerned that I may be coming across negatively toward mexican food."

I'm concerned that I may be coming across negatively toward people who have only a limited understanding of Mexican food. Really I'm just trying to get better information out there and loosen up some of the popular stereotypes.
