Baby it's over; Drive 105 is no more

As I was preparing to leave work today, I flipped on my radio at my desk to my favorite Twin Cities station. Being a very intense music fan, I am passionate about the tunes I dig. It troubled me when I turned on Drive 105 only to find a simulcast of their big brother, 93X.

The last song played, just after 2:40 PM, was Weezer - Say It Ain't So.

A rather fitting tribute to the red-headed stepchild of Twin Cities radio -- the station that has flirted with alternative music (with a couple 9-month diversions) in one form or another since 1994.

Rumor has it that at 6 AM Tuesday, May 8, 2007, the three stations that make up Drive 105 will debut a format entitled "love". It sounds lame as hell to this guy and judging from the sample playlist I found, it will suck as much as a 24-hour loop of Celine Dion while Satan himself pitchforks you in the ass as you are forced to drink can after can of Tab. Yeah, that bad.

The sample playlist...

Target Audience:
Women 35-54
Frequency: 105.1,105.3, 105.7 Triplecast
Call Letters: WGVX, WGVY,WGVZ
Hard to Say I’m Sorry- Chicago
Baby I’m A Want you- Bread
Easy-Commodores
Happy Together- Turtles
Landslide-Fleetwood Mac
Looks Like we Made it – Barry Manilow
Slow Hand – Pointer Sisters
Your Song – Elton John
Baby Come Back – Player
Give Me Love – George Harrison
Homeward Bound- Simon & Garfunkel
How Deep is Your Love- BeeGees
Lost in Love- Air Supply
You Are the Sunshine of my Life- Stevie Wonder
Close To You- Carpenters

Every mini-van driving soccer mom with a 15 year old will be pleased as punch when she turns on her radio and hears this festival of shit pouring forth from her speakers.

Over/under on how long it lasts -- 9 months.

UPDATE: (5/9/07)
Thanks for much love after the untimely fall of Drive 105. We all know it's "only" a radio station but music breeds passion and alt-rock fans are some of the most loyal and passionate fans in all of music. With that being said, I invite you to stop back Thursday evening as I retool my normal "Tuned In" Friday/Weekend music feature and shine the spotlight on the local bands, DJs and a certain show which made Drive 105 so well liked.

What kind of sphincter brain decided to program that lame crap?

Must have been an accountant with no music experience. They tried the love/soft cock shit down here and it failed within 10 months.

But does it have the John Tesch show?

I'm listening to the web stream as I do some work prep stuff and it is so soft and boring that I am seriously feeling sleepy and considering going back to bed. It sounds so amateurish -- something that would even sound bad back in my hometown and this is "the big city". These assclowns need to get back in the game and this does everything but that.

There is also the undeniable fact that whenever a new station or format launches, it is at its best for the first two weeks and then really starts to suck.

My guess is that by the end of the month, you'll be begging, begging, for You Are the Sunshine of my Life by Little Stevie Wonder.

Yes sir, this is as good as this station will get, and that is pretty freakin' scary.

Dear lord, that's an awful playlist. It's worse than I thought it would be.

In response to the comment you left in my blog -- I agree, the station lasted quite a long time. While it was repetitive, at least the mix was good and they played new music.

This Love105 sounds even worse than WLTE.

Word.

I am so spiteful. I've left comments everywhere I can find. Any "Contact Us" link associated with ABC Radio has been clicked and cussed out by me.

Siriusly (haha, get it?) 'regular' radio just died.

Nice post. As bad as Drive105 was, who in their right mind is wants a station like LOVE105? It sounds like supermarket radio.

Thanks for the post. I can only hope that your assessment of the longevity of this change is correct. I also plan to use "shit festival" as a regular part of my vocabulary when describing Love 105. I tried listening for 5 minutes and found myself trying to drown in the 4" deep coffee cup at my desk.

Im actaully a Drive 105 intern, or well I was. And this just breaks my heart. Drive was the greatest station ever and now theres nothing to listen to! I want everyone to call in and complain, lets get rid of the LOVE bullshit! Feel free to visit my blog and comment more on this.

The really sad thing is that the music that they're playing for all of those minivan-driving soccer moms is the same music that they'll hear once they get to their shopping destinations anyway.

It's also hard to believe that there aren't at least nineteen other stations in your area already playing this same saccharine-laced soma.

I feel your pain. But there's a lot of scar tissue, too -- I don't listen to any commercial radio stations anymore, and haven't in close to a decade now.

ok fine, i understand that lonely women ages 35-55 like their radios as much as the next sap.. but why take away what easily might have been the best station on radio? i say we do the world, or at least the drive world, a big favor and bring Drive 105 back.

What's this Love shit!? I want Drive back! I am a bit pissed off about this new format crap! Way to soft! Bring back Drive you stupid ABC people!

No said...

I think the big boys are underestimating the 35-55 women target...I mean there is so much Air Supply we can take before rolling over the minivan, ya know?

I do have a confession to make. I did see Air Supply in concert in 1981...before most of you were born, right?

Sornie said...

Hey, now, I'm a child of the late 70s, the very late 70s to be exact so to each their own but Air Supply, I dunno about THAT. Their time came, went and has been, for the most part, forgotten.

I have another confession to make...I really hate Air Supply!!!!

Yeah, there's a good idea. Get rid of a radio station and replace it with music that even LESS people are going to be interested in. Good move, ABC. Which wonder brain thought that up?

I had the weirdest feeling just now.
Like I was in an elevator.
But Celine Dion and Satan was there and I had a can of Tab in my hand.

Thankfully I was only daydreaming...

Y'know how I called you all pissed off about this?? shortly thereafter I came upon a wonderful idea. I'm starting a fucking revolution- not a campaign- to get Drive back. I already emailed those pricks through their "website" and very very soon there will be further developments of which you will be made well aware. Will whatever I do change anything? Who knows but we'll at least be able to say we tried. Keep your ear to the ground and you'll hear me coming....

Sornie said...

Trying is half the battle Adam, let me know of your plans, you know I am always interested.

Jen, I totally agree, someone wasn't thinking clearly or had taken a bit too much cold medication for this format to sound like a good idea.

Be thankful that you were only dreaming Alicia. I wish i could say that this was only a dream but reality, no matter how petty the cause is, sucks. Thanks though for the bad mental picture. I've had a Tab and it was worse than drinking the water from a cooler after camping for a long weekend when it's all bloody and smelly -- yeah, THAT.

Twin Cities' alternative radio station Drive 105 has been taken off the air and replaced by Love 105. Needless to say there has been a format change and not one for the better. If you care about alternative music or liked Drive 105 or both then please go to the following sites to show some support. The first is a MySpace page at this URL- www.myspace.com/bringbackdrive. Go there and add it as a friend. The second site is an online petition at www.petitionspot.com/petitions/Drive105. Go there and sign it. Despite the advances of technology in on-demand music Drive 105 is a station worth resurrecting. Please help in any way you can think of. I will repost this bulletin at least once a week or every few days. I ask that you do the same and let's see how many people we can get to this cause.

Please go to these sites and repost this bulletin!

22 comments---woah..let's start a revolution! Wasn't there a radio station in the cities called The Revolution?

Sornie said...

You are very correct No. Rev 105 was the mid-90s precursor to what became Drive 105 after a few poorly thought out format changes. The alt-rock always comes back home.

I used to listen to Howard Stern before I taught my art classes and it got me laughing and in a great mood. It wss suddenly gone as was a music station I liked. For a long time I didn't even bother listening to the radio because nothing I liked was being played until Drive 105 started. I really liked that station and now once again I wait for anoher radio station to come my way. I hope it is soon. And there is never any substantial warning or explanation. Why?

There's always the Morning Show....I think I'm kidding, aren't I?

Sornie said...

Wow! The sheer amount of interest in the loss of Drive 105 is amazing. Don't let this opportunity slip away, head over to http://www.myspace.com/bringbackdrive and see what you can do to remember and try to bring back Minnesota's Alternative Radio; Drive 105!

And if you think that I have lost my mind with the lack of anything but music from last week, try again. I am back to normal today but am also adding a "song of the day" that sorta ties in with the content. I am also not forgetting about Drive 105 and hope that the literally hundreds who read this blog each day won't forget either.

OYCOTT 93X...LOVE 15 IS SHIT

Anonymous said...

Drive had its awesome moments and its lame just like any station, but at least it was a station I didn't have to change every two minutes because of commercial breaks. To top it off if there was a song I didn't like all I had to do was sit through it for all of 2.5 minutes and something I did like would come on. This "Love 105" is corn kernel in the poo that is the twin cities radio stations.

Dude, you cannot believe how disappointed I was, and how PISSED my wife was when we tried to put drive 105 on and got AIR Supply...what kind of sick joke was this? I like a variety of music, KQ only plays "classic Rock" and the Cities 97 is just too full of itslef. Satellite radio is looking better all of the time.
